We are pleased to announce the winner of the 2015 Aura Estrada Short Story Contest, selected by judge Ruth Ozeki.
Congratulations to Barbara Hamby, pictured, who won for her story “Dole Girl,” which will be published in the July/August 2015 issue of Boston Review. Hamby also receives a $1,500 prize.
Ozeki had this to say about “Dole Girl”: “The setting of this story, a pineapple cannery in 1970 Honolulu, is wonderfully unusual and well described, and the turns of the narrator’s mind are often delightful and surprising. ‘Dole Girl’ evokes a very particular time and place and tone, as well as the narrator’s keen yearning to be free from those insular particularities.”

In addition to the winner, of course, our prize honors Aura Estrada (1977–2007), a promising young Mexican writer and student and wife of the writer Francisco Goldman. Aura’s works, and more about her life, can be found here.
